The appts. is used for sand blasting a thin metal foil or sheet to produce a frosted surface. The blasting material may be sand, glass balls, metal balls or other suitable particulate material, and it is blown onto the foil (7) by an air blast provided by centrifugal bars (4,5). The foil is stood on edge, and moves along a conveyor (8). It is accommodated in a chamber (1) whose pressure is kept below atmospheric. The used particulate material falls to the bottom (20) of the chamber and is drawn up a pipe (18) to a collector (16). Here it is separated from the airstream which is drawn into a suction pump (17). The material can fall down (26) into an intake (25) from which it is drawn into the bars (4,5). The sand blast appts. may be raised or lowered as required.
