The suction device for solid or liquid substances has an electrically driven suction unit with hose and a recovery device (5,7) which moves the hose from a work position away from the suction unit into a rest position. The recovery device constantly biases the hose with a resetting force and has an associated brake unit (8,12) which can be switched on and off as required. The brake unit pref. acts when the suction unit is switched on and a switch can be provided to switch the brake device off even when the suction unit is running. This switch can be mounted on the handle of the suction hose (4). USE/ADVANTAGE - The hose automatically returns to the rest position but need not be constantly biased during operation.
