The CRT has grid electrodes made up of scanning electrodes and the data electrodes which form the matrix structure with the scanning electrodes. The CRT has four gradations with interruptions corresponding to the number of gradations provided in each of the waveforms of the voltages applied to the scanning electrodes. The interruptions are formed by the application of scanning signals and a brightness control slot signal to AND gates of which the outputs are applied to the scanning electrodes. Alternatively, the pulse voltage waveforms with interruptions corresponding to the required gradations are applied to the data electrodes instead of the to the scanning electrodes.
