PURPOSE:To attain characteristics low in fogging and high in sensitivity and gradation by using a combination of a specified emulsion and a specified compound chemically sensitized under a pH of 5.3 - 6.0. CONSTITUTION:This emulsion is chemically sensitized under a pH of 5.3 - 6.0 by adding the sensitizing dye represented by formula I before adding a chemical sensitizer and the emulsion layer or its adjacent layer contains the compound represented by formula II. In formula I each of A1 - A4 is H, lower alkyl, alkoxy, or the like; R0 is H, lower alkyl, or aryl; each of R1 and R2 is alkyl; X1 is an anion; and (n) is 1 or 2. In formula II, each of M1 and M2 is H, an alkali metal atom, or the like; (n) is an integer of 1 - 8; and R is H or 1 - 6 C alkyl, thus permitting occurrence of fogging to be prevented even in the case of developing at high temperature for a long time and characteristics high in sensitivity and gradation to be attained.
