Modified pseudoceramides are defined, together with their synthesis and compositions comprising them for topical application to human skin, hair and nails. The modified pseudoceramides have a structure given by (I) or (II) and an approximate summary is that R<1>, R<4>, R<5> are aliphatic hydrocarbon, A is H or an aliphatic group terminated by OR<3> and at least one R<2> or R<3> is phosphate or sulphate. The presence of phosphate or sulphate facilitates skin absorption, after which the phosphate or sulphate is removed by enzymes naturally present in vivo. |
