PURPOSE:To reduce the flickering of a screen by utilizing a display device which can control the intensity and the polarization characteristics of exit light for each picture element for elliptic polarization of light. CONSTITUTION:A polarization spectacles 11 mounted with polarized plates 21 and 22 having mutually vertical polarization axes by one each for right and left is used. In a stereoscopic picture display 12 varying the intensity and the polarization characteristics of exit light elliptic polarization of light for each picture element, the polarization characteristics for exit light elliptic polarization of light for one picture element P is controlled by a control part 13 so that the intensity component of the direction parallel to the polarization axis of the polarized plate 21 on the left eye side of the spectacles 11 can be proportional to the lightness of a picture element PL for left picture corresponding to a picture element P and so that the intensity component in the direction parallel to the polarization axis of the polarized plate 22 on the right eye side vertical to this can be proportional to the bright value of the picture element PR. Thus, the right and left pictures are switchingly displayed by time division, the number of pictures per unit time is reduced, and the flickering on the screen can be reduced. |
