PURPOSE:To obtain a proper still picture automatically detecting whether or not an output of a solid-state image pickup element reaches a sufficient level to obtain a still picture while a timer means outputs an aperture full open time signal so as to control a storage time of the solid-state image pickup element. CONSTITUTION:When a freeze switch 13 is first turned on after application of power, a monostable multivibrator 15a outputs the aperture full open time signal L and a drive circuit 20 reduces a storage time of a solid-state image pickup element 9 from a usual 1/60sec into 1/240sec and drives the element. When a comparator 18a detects that the luminous quantity of an object 2 is much and an output of the solid-state image pickup element 9 is at a proper level, an output of the solid-state image pickup element 9 driven whose storage time is 1/240sec is outputted to a memory 24 as a still picture. Furthermore, when the luminous quantity of the object 2 is less, the storage time is restored to 1/60sec. Then the solid-state image pickup element 9 is driven and a still picture is obtained while the aperture 6 is set in a completely stable state.
