The invention relates to a method of sorting elongate objects, such as French beans, in order to separate acceptable objects from a reject or foreign objects which have to be separated out. According to this method, the objects are conveyed on a conveyor means to a sorting station in which the objects to be separated are identified and separated. The method is characterised in that each object is made to pass separately from the others and advantageously perpendicularly through a light beam emitted by a light source (33) and received by a receiver (35) for detecting the shape of the object, which shape is defined by the unlit zone on the receiver (35), the shape defined by the unlit zone is compared to values representing the shape of a reference object, and an object whose detected shape does not correspond to the values of the reference shape is ejected into a reject station (F). The invention can be used for the automatic sorting of curvilinear objects. <IMAGE>
