[Also in Division D1] A stapling machine in which successive portions of an advancing tow of filaments clamped between opposed successive pairs of teeth 9, 10, on contacting rims of rotating draw wheels 1, 2, are severed by knives 17 carried on a rotating head 13 and helically disposed around a shaft 14 e.g. as described in Specification 926,748, comprises a rotating grinding disc 26 which periodically e.g. after every 2500 revolutions of the cutter, moves from a remote position, engages the knives successively, and reciprocates once along the surface generated thereby, to sharpen them. The disc is reconditioned by periodic contact with an adjustable diamond point 30 and is driven by a motor 27 mounted on a slide 28 traversable along a guide 29 which may be displaced towards the shaft 14 to compensate for wear on the disc.</p> |
