PURPOSE:To obtain an asbestos-free friction material which can reduce the wear of the matiny material and is improved in the stability of the coefficient of friction at a low to high speed by mixing a fibrous component other than asbestos, a thermosetting resin component, and a powdery filler component containing a magnesia-silica mixture. CONSTITUTION:A magnesia-silica mixture preferably having a ratio of MgO to SiO2 of (10 to 90):(90 to 10) in an amount of 0.1-20vol.% based on a friction material to be obtained is mixed, if necessary, with graphite, barium sulfate, etc., to give a powdery filler component. A fibrous component other than asbestos, selected among organic fibers such as aramid fibers, inorganic fibers such as glass fibers, rock wool or ceramic fibers, and metal fibers such as copper, bronze, aluminum or brass fibers is mixed with a thermosetting resin component comprising, e.g. a phenolic, urea or melamine resin, and the powdery filler component to give the title friction material. |
