Installation for generating electricity, consisting of axial-flow hydroelectric units, and of a support dam. A turbine wheel is composed of blades (1, 18) fixed onto an external shroud (2) and without a hub. It rotates on bearings and peripheral thrust bearings, which are fixed to end flanges (7) of the stator (6). The poles of the rotor (5) of the generator are fixed onto the external shroud (2) of this wheel. The stator (6) of the generator surrounds the rotor, and is secured to the fixed external casing (9). The bearings (11) and the thrust bearings (13) operate, possibly, with a pressurised inert gas or with a film of water, or they are of the rolling-contact type. A manifold (16) with a distributor (side blades) (16a) precede it, a diffuser (17) and a valve (77a) follow the hydroelectric unit. The blades of the wheel and of the distributor are fixed or orientatable (18). An electric regulating device controls their orientation depending on the flow rate and height of the pressure head. <IMAGE>
