1,240,966. Matrix displays. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 29 April, 1970 [2 May, 1969], No. 20559/70. Heading G5C. [Also in Division H1] A display device comprises first and second pluralities of conductors R1-R4, C1-C3, arranged to define a plurality of crosspoint display regions, two layers 51, 52 of dielectric material disposed between said first plurality and said second plurality of conductors, and a substantially uniform continuous layer of gaseous display material disposed between said layers of dielectric material. The row and column conductors R and C may be transparent gold strips vapour deposited on the dielectric layers 51 and 52, e.g. of glass, which are separated by spacers 55. A sinusoidal or pulsed A.C. sustaining voltage supplied by source 20 has a value less than the breakdown voltage e.g. one half. Addressing of a selected display region is effected through row and column drivers 40 and 30 (shown as pulse transformers) under control of a circuit 80 by applying coincident row and column signals which by themselves or, preferably, in conjunction with the sustaining voltage are sufficient to effect breakdown. Write pulses are applied at or just after a peak of the sustaining voltage, and erase pulses are applied when the instantaneous value of the sustaining voltage is at or near zero. |
