In the rail or beam being assessed is a blind hole, the bottom of which is in the plane for neutral fibres in the material and on which the expansion indicator is fitted. A casing (4) of elastically deformable material can be inserted in a hole (2) in the rail (1), and in the casing at least one expansion indicator is inserted to record its deformation. The casing external dimensions are smaller than the hole in the rail or beam, and for force conduct from the rail to the casing at least one prismatic or wedge-shaped component (7) produces a location in the area for the vertical neutral fibres (8) between the rail and the casing. The casing also has a raised part, with which it is at least partially linearly pressed against the inner surface of the hole in the area of the vertical neutral fibres in the rail. The hole in the rail can also pass right through it, and usually two expansion indicators (16) are used, the axes of which enclose an angle of 90 deg. to each other, and one of 45 deg. to the vertical direction.
