The detection is performed using measuring signals. Voltage jumps (discontinuities) generated as measuring signals by the feeding converter 3, 33, 63 are used according to the invention as measuring signals, and the measured data determined are fed to a computer which calculates the rotor position from the dependence of the stator reactance. When the synchronous machine is started, a premagnetization (magnetic bias) is set and one measurement each is carried out for a fuel-weakening and a fuel-strengthening action. The advantage of the invention consists both in its high accuracy and in the fact that no additional analogue current sources are required to locate the rotor (magnet wheel). In addition, the rotor can be located for any load.
