1319024 Hydrocarbon conversion catalysts INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 19 April 1971 [23 Feb 1970] 22215/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] Catalyst for use in the reformation, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation and isomerisation of hydrocarbons comprises carrier material which supports platinum and iridium each in an amount of from 0.005 to 1.0 weight per cent relative to the carrier material, the distribution of the platinum and iridium in the catalyst being such that any value for the concentration of platinum or iridium, as obtained by means of a Casting microanalyser (in respect of which a literature reference is given in the Specification), is from 0.5 to 2.0 times the average concentration of platinum or iridium. The catalyst also may contain up to 15 weight per cent, relative to the carrier material, of halogen, for example fluorine which may be derived from hydrofluoric acid (see Example 4) or chlorine which may be derived by use of chlorine-containing platinum/iridium compounds in the preparation of the catalyst. Exemplified carrier materials are magnesia, silica, silica-alumina and alumina, including tetragonal gamma-alumina (see Example 5). The catalyst may be prepared by a process which comprises impregnating carrier material with an aqueous solution having a pH not exceeding 4 and containing at least one platinum compound, at least one iridium compound and an aminoalcohol which preferably contains, per molecule, from 1 to 6 hydroxyl groups, from 1 to 6 amino groups and from 2 to 20 carbon atoms. Exemplified aminoalcohols are monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, propenolamines, for example 2,2,3-triaminopropan-1-ol and 2,2- diaminopropan-1,3-diol, and butanolamines, for example 2-aminobutan-1-ol.
