The socket (1a) on a cable testing equipment accepts a cylindrical multiway plug which is coded by a series of circumferential keys. The plug is connected to the cable assembly, of which it is a part, which is to be tested. The cable assembly conforms to defence equipment standards. The socket is arranged with an extra wide slot (6) to accommodate all possible positions of a single coded key. If a plug with multiple coded keys is used, the socket has sufficient wide slots, typically, two for four coded keys, to accommodate all possible key positions. As the cable test is only for continuity and dielectric strength the coding is not important, and can be checked visually. All connectors have standard pin patterns.
