A pair of tongs for moving stranded material, esp. for drawing cables in a conduit, has a long part with a longitudinal groove for the reception of a part of the stranded material. Near the end of the long part, a handle is located so that it can be swivelled. The long part of the tongs consists of an elongated gripping part and an extended head part. The handle has a ledge and is located in the hea part such that the ledge, upon operation of the handle, at least partly engages in the longitudinal running groove of the tongs long part. The ledge has a curved part towards the located end of the handle.
