A lap-top computer system is provided with a modem board (13) to allow communication to take place with external equipment. The computer system has a bus that supports the various modules and the modem is coupled via an interface (12). The modem module has a serial I/o coupled to a microprocessor, a modem and a hybrid circuit (13d) coupled to a network control stage with a connection to a telephone line. The modem module operates with control data held in a register (7) and also provides output to a serial I/o module. ADVANTAGE - Allows simultaneous use of both an extended unit and a modem board.
