A solenoid has a fixed coil assembly (1) with a central bore (6) that receives the core element (2) of ferromagentic material. The top end of the core supports a permanent magnet (3) of neodym iron or samarium. The lower end of the core is available (4) for connection to a load. Excitation of the coil causes the core to move vertical, the stray field being concentrated upon the permanent magnet to increase the force.
