The exhaust valve camshaft (2) driven by chain or belt from the crankshaft carries an additional toothed wheel (4) in mesh with a double gear wheel (6) having cylindrical and bevel toothed sections (7, 8). The bevel gear (8) engaged the angled teeth (10) of a pinion (9) on the inlet valve camshaft (3). The double gear wheel (6) is adjusted axially by the piston (12) of a double-acting hydraulic cylinder (3) supplied from a pump-and-valve unit (16). USE/ADVANTAGE - A simple structure can be inserted into a series drive train to vary the valve opening or closure time w.r.t. piston movement.
