Apparatus for orienting a load suspended on a cable 85 from a crane boom 90, Fig. 1, comprises a platform 10, a flywheel 60 in a bracket 48 supported for rotation about a horizontal axis by shafts 51, 52 mounted in bearings on gimbal 30 members 32, 33 and a clutch 20 between the platform 10 and a shaft 25 fixed to gimbal member 31. In use the flywheel 60 is driven by an electric motor 64. If it is desired to rotate a load 15, attached to the platform 10, about a vertical axis power is supplied to a motor 50 to tilt the bracket 48 and hence the flywheel 48 about the said horizontal axis. This results in a torque about a vertical axis which is transmitted to the platform 10 through the clutch 20. Fig. 4 shows a modification wherein the motor 50 is mounted on the platform 10. The action of the flywheel is to render the shaft 25 relatively stiff and rigid so that drive applied by the motor 50 to drive element 105 secured to the gimbal shaft 25 rotates the platform 10, the flywheel 60 being tilted about the horizontal shafts 51, 52 with the frame 48 by reaction. Electric power is supplied through slip rings in blocks 40, 45 and 47, 48. The clutch 20, which is normally engaged, may be disengaged in order to reset the initial position of the flywheel 60 so as to permit several applications of the driving torque, if required. |
