PURPOSE:To prepare the subject compound in a high selectivity and in a good yield while preventing the production of by-products and the polymerization of acrylonitrile by reacting an aniline compound with acrylonitrile in the presence of a catalyst comprising zinc hydroxide and/or zinc oxide and an aryl sulfonic acid. CONSTITUTION:When an aniline compound is allowed to react with acrylonitrile to provide a N-cyanoethyl aniline compound, the reaction is performed in the presence of zinc hydroxide and/or zinc oxide and an aryl sulfonic acid (e.g. p-toluene sulfonic acid). In the reaction, the ratio of the sum of zinc hydroxide and/or zinc oxide to the aryl sulfonic acid is preferably approximately 0.5-5wt.%, and the chemical equivalent ratio of zinc hydroxide and/or zinc oxide to the aryl sulfonic acid is preferably approximately 3/1 to 1/3. By the method, the by-production of N,N-dicyanoethyl aniline compounds and the polymerization of the acrylonitrile can be prevented, and the high selectivity and the good yield can be achieved. |
