1305487 Increasing lift on aircraft R A MAYER JNR 21 Sept 1970 [25 Sept 1969] 44842/70 Heading F2R An aircraft is provided, on an exterior surface, with a plurality of slots substantially parallel to the normal direction of motion, and with means for generating a flow of air and directing it to said slots. For example a wing 2 may be provided with ribs 10 each having a central aperture 11 so that the wing contains a chamber made up of a plurality of sections 13, each bonded at its upper limit by an inclined baffle 14 which, together with wing surface 7, defines a discharge chamber 15. Ambient air is supplied to the wing from pressure chamber 8, which may be supplied either from the engine 5 or by separate blowers, and passes to each discharge chamber 15 by way of inlets 16 in the ribs and is emitted over the upper surface of the wing through elongated slots 17, thereby producing or increasing lift. Each slot may be provided with deflectors (18), Fig. 4 (not shown), extending inwardly into the respective chamber 15 and inclined towards the edge of the wing, thus tending to confine emitted air to the centre of the wing and prevent spillage over the edges, and it is possible to vary the area of the slots 17 throughout the length of the wing in order to achieve a constant air velocity. Similar slots 20 may be provided on tailplane 19, and further slots 22 in the upper part of the aircraft nose, which may be supplied in such a manner as to control pitch roll and yaw. Additional slots may be provided on the lower surface of the tailplane or on any part of the fuselage.
