A cut-off mechanism for use with a continuoustype tube manufacturing machine comprises a cut-off mandrel 21 for supporting the tube, a plurality of knives 40 mounted on conveyer chains 27a, 27b such that they are at an angle with respect to the direction of travel of the conveyer and disposed perpendicular with respect to the axis of the mandrel during the cutting operation. The conveyer chains 27a, 27b are provided with links 44, Fig. 8, to which are pivoted the ends of plates 41. The knives are secured in blocks 54 which are screwed to the plates 41. Rollers 35 are pivoted on the links and run in tracks 34 formed in plates 31, 32 mounted on a base-plate 30. The plate 32 is provided with pins 32b which are adapted to slide in arcuate slots 32a formed in the baseplate 30, the movement being effected by means of a ram 33 thereby varying the spacing between the knives. The base-plate 30 is connected to a mounting plate 48 by means of a linkage 47 so that it may be raised by means of a ram 46 in order to bring the knives into contact with tube; the plate 30 is guided by rods 45. In order to maintain the knives at right-angles with the axis of mandrel 21 when the spacing between the blades is varied by the ram 33, the mounting plate 48 is provided with rollers 48a so that its angular position may be adjusted by means of a ram 50, the mounting plate being provided with a pivot 49. During a cutting operation the mandrel is supported by means of stabilizing rollers 52, Fig. 3. A photo-electric cell system 24a is arranged to provide control signals for synchronizing the speed of travel of the knives and the axial speed of the tube thereby maintaining the cut ends at rightangles to the tube. |
