PURPOSE:To improve the combustion performance of the secondary air by accelerating the oxidation of the uncombusted harmful components by installing a secondary air feed/discharge operating device and a secondary air feed/discharge controller for controlling the secondary air feed/discharge operating device, onto an engine. CONSTITUTION:An engine is equipped with a secondary air feed//discharge operating device 1 and a secondary air feed/discharge controller 2. The secondary air feed/discharge operating device 1 allows the secondary air feed/discharge chamber 3 to communicate to the combustion chamber 5 of the engine, and control-operates a capacity varying means 4 in synchronization with the crankshaft of the engine by the secondary air feed/discharge controller 2. While, the secondary air feed/discharge controller 2 operates the capacity varying means 4 toward capacity increase in the air suction timing set in the intake period of the combustion chamber 5, and the air in the combustion chamber 5 is sucked into the secondary air feed//discharge chamber 3. Further, during the air discharge set within an increased pressure combustion period from the suction completion timing to the combustion completion timing in the combustion chamber 5, the capacity varying means 4 is operated toward capacity reduction, and the secondary air in the secondary air feed/discharge chamber 3 is discharged into the combustion chamber 5.
