1323914 Combating weeds both pre- & postemergence BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK AG 10 Dec 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 58593/70 Heading A5E A process for protecting crops from unwanted plants comprises treating the soil in which the growth of the unwanted plants is to be prevented, after the crop has been sown and before emergence of the unwanted plants, with a) a compound of formula where R denotes an araliphatic radical, or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, which may optionally bear one or more halogen atoms or hydroxyl groups as substituents, and Y denotes hydrogen or alkyl, or b) a compound of the formula where one of the radicals R1 and R2 denotes nitro and the other denotes methyl, trifluoromethyl or methylsulhponyl, R3 and R4 are identical or different and each denotes an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, or a lower alkyl bearing as substituent or substituents one or more halogen atoms, or azido, cyano, hydroxy, or alkoxy radicals, or acyloxy radicals of formula R5.CO.O, where R5 denotes a hydrocarbon or halogen-substituted hydrocarbon radical or an optionally N-substituted amino radical, or R3 may alternatively denote hydrogen, or R3 and R4, together with the nitrogen atom whose substituents they are, may alternatively form a hexamethylenimine ring, or c) a compound of the formula where R1 and R2 are identical or different and each denotes alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or cycloalkyl, having not more than six carbon atoms, or aryl, or R1 and R2, together with the two oxygen atoms and phosphorus whose substituents they are, may form a 5-membered or 6-membered heterocycle, X denotes sulphur or oxygen, and R3 denotes an aliphatic radical of not more than 5 carbon atoms, or d) a compound of the formula where X denotes thiocyano, nitro, halogen, trifluoromethyl or alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or alkoxy, R denotes an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms which may optionally be substituted by chloro, bromo, cyano or thiocyano, R1 denotes hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 3 carbon atoms which may optionally be substituted by halogen, or alkynyl having 2 to 5 carbon atoms, and n denotes one of the integers 0, 1, 2 and 3, and treating the crop plants and unwanted plants after emergence of the unwanted plants with e) a compound of the formula where R denotes a lower aliphatic radical or cycloalkyl, or its salts; "lower" denoting "containing not more than 4 carbon atoms".
