[Also in Division H1] A thin magnetic film storage element including a pair of magnetic films 20, 24 disposed on one side of an electrically conducting substrate 12 has one drive line 16 disposed between the films and the substrate and a second drive line 22 disposed parallel to drive line 16 and between the films, the drive lines 16 being spaced so that the magnetic field intensity in each of the films 20, 24 is substantially equal when the appropriate current is passing through these lines in the same direction. A word line 28 is arranged transverse the films 20, 24, and in operation of the store shown in Fig. 1 a positive pulse is passed through word line 28 to provide a hard axis field and a positive or negative pulse is passed through the first and second drive lines 16, 22 in parallel by means of switches 30, 36 in order to write a " 1 " or " 0 " into the element. Read out is achieved by connecting read amplifier 40 to drive line 22 and passing a word current through word line 28. The two magnetic films 20, 24 may be closed at their edges by two magnetic strips Fig. 5 (not shown). When current passes through the drive lines 16, 22 the two fields 60, 62 set up by the current, Fig. 6, are such that there is zero magnetic field in film 20 whereas the field 64 due to the combined currents in the drive lines 16, 22 magnetizes film 24 in the direction shown. An image current is also produced in the ground plane 12 as shown by virtual drive lines 16<SP>1</SP>, 22<SP>1</SP> and the effect thereof is to produce resultant magnetic fields 72, 74 which pass through the magnetic films 20, 24 respectively. The resultant effect is for film 20 to be magnetized from right to left and film 24 from left to right since magnetic field 64 is greater than field 74. The magnetic field intensities in the two films may be made equal by adjusting the amount of current through the lines 16, 22 or by adjusting the distance between the ground plane and drive lines 16, 22. An array of the elements of Fig. 1 may be formed on a common substrate, Fig. 8 (not shown), by depositing elongated conductor and magnetic film strips thereon. Read out may be nondestructive or destructive. The arrangement described minimizes the effect of full bit fields and stray fields on unselected elements.
