Novel compounds of formula A wherein each of Y and Y<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C 1-5 trifluoroalkyl, C 1-5 alkoxy, C 1-5 alkylthio, C 1-5 alkylsulfonyl, or di(C 1-5 alkyl)sulfamoyl radical; each of R and R<SP>1</SP>, which are the same as or different from one another, is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-5 alkyl radical; and Z is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy, C 1-5 alkoxy or C 1-5 alkylsulfamoyl radical and, when Z is hydroxy, there is optionally a C 1-5 alkyl radical also attached to the 11-position and salts thereof are prepared using the method depicted in either of the following reaction sequences In the above reaction schemes I and III Z<SP>11</SP> in formulae III to VI is the same as Z unless Z is hydroxy in which case Z<SP>11</SP> is keto, Z<SP>1</SP> in formulae VII and VIII is the same as Z but excludes alkanoyloxy and each of R<SP>11</SP> and K<SP>111</SP> is H or C 1-5 alkyl. Intermediates depicted in the above reaction sequences are isolated and the further intermediates set out in reaction sequence II are prepared. N-oxide starting materials are prepared by oxidation of the corresponding tertiary amine. Pharmaceutical compositions in conventional forms for oral or parenteral administration, having anti-arrhythmic activity comprise an above novel compound or salt and a carrier therefor.
