The head is driven by a motor (2) through transmission which provides a welding pressure (p) through an integral forward feed unit (4). A reciprocating slider is connected with one half of the joining tool (5) and is combined as a electromechanical unit with the forward feed (4). An eccentric shaft (7) has a balancing disc (8) and the link (9) is of low mass construction with a self-aligning bearing (10) at one end and a grooved bearing (11) at the other. A tool (5) which is shaped to suit the part (22) to be joined to a fixed work piece (30) is mounted on a slider (23) driven by a link (9). The movement is determined by altering the throw (e) of the eccentric shaft (7). It is driven by a brushless motor (2) whose speed can be continuously varied up to 10,000 r.p.m. The forward feed is mounted on a slide (27) and the welding pressure (p) is provided by a cylinder (20).
