In the example illustrated a conical glass portion 2 is sealed at one end to the member 1 and at the other to a metal tube 7 which supports the cold cathode 6 and acts as a lead-in conductor, the members 1 and 7 forming a coaxial line. A flange 9 protects the glass from charged particles and sputtered metal, and a metal exhaust tube 8 extends into the end of the lead 7. The end of the cylindrical member 1 is closed by a metal cover 4 which may be hemispherical and which is coated with a target material 5 such as a tungsten foil, or alternatively rhenium or gold.
