Apparatus for cooling cement clinker discharged from a rotary kiln 1 comprises a shaft 10 and a reciprocatory grate 4 supplied with air through plenum chambers 6, 7 and 8 and through pipes 16 and 17, said shaft having a lower wall part 9 formed of articulated panels 11, 12 and 12<SP>1</SP> pivoted at the top on a shaft 13. A measuring and monitoring device controls the height of material in the shaft or the floor resistance to the cooling air by controlling the reciprocating rate of the grate. A ram 15 may be used to break lumps in the shaft and a further control device may swing one or more of the panels aside to facilitate passage of lumps. |
