Cyclic oligoarylene sulphides (I) are used to modify thermoplasts (II). ((I) are obtd. by reacting p-dihalo-aromatic cpd. with opt. hydrated Na sulphide in dipolar aprotic solvent then extracting (I) and, depending on reaction conditions, minor amt. of linear oligoarylene sulphides into, e.g. toluene, from the arylene sulphide polymers obtd.). Mixts. (III) comprise (A) 99.99-85% (all pts. wt.) (II) (B) 0.01-15% cpd. of formula (I), where Ar = 6-24C arylene; n = 3-25; ((I) opt. occurring as mixt. and opt. contg. linear oligoarylene sulphides with Ph, chlorophenyl, or mercaptophenyl end gps.), and opt. (C) 1-150, on (A) + (B), other additives with proviso that if (II) is a polyarylene sulphide, Ar in formula (1) does not correspond to arylene residue in (II). (II) is pref. polyamide, partic. polyamide 6 or polyamide 66 or copolyamide based on these; polyester, partic. PET (IV) or polybutylene terephthalate; copolymer of (alpha-methyl)styrene, (meth)acrylonitrile, butadiene, and opt. an acrylate; or polycarbonate, partic. bisphenol A polycarbonate. USE/ADVANTAGE - (III) for prepn. of shaped articles, films, fibres, opt. reinforced semifinished prods. and composites. (III) have lower melt viscosity than (II), increased UV stability. (0/0)
