The alarm system comprises a snap-opening gate (2) which is normally held in the open position by a spring (4). This is located between an audible alarm system (3) which is pneumatically operated, and a gas supply source (1). The gate is operated by a sensed pressure in the respirator circuit. The audible alarm is formed by a chamber divided into two halves (12,13) by a membrane (11). The two half-chambers are connected to the outlet of the gate via conduits (9,10) including fixed (14) and variable (15) pneumatic resistors. One chamber includes an orifice (16) open to the atmosphere.
