PURPOSE:To selectively reduce only nitro group by reducing an aromatic nitro compound in a carbon monoxide/water system in the presence of a homogeneous catalyst comprising a Ru compound and a solvent by coexistence of a specific amine and suppressing side reactions with highly catalytic activity. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic nitro compound except nitroanthraquinones is reduced by using carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a homogeneous catalyst wholly or partially dissolved in a solvent, comprising a Ru compound, preferably a complex containing a carbonyl ligand or a compound [especially preferably Ru3(CO)12] to readily form a carbonyl complex under a reaction condition by coexistence of an amine shown by the formula (R<1> and R<2> are H, alkyl which may be replaced, nonsubstituted cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl which may be replaced; with the proviso that R<1> and R<2> are not H at the same time or bonded to form ring) to give an aromatic amine compound in high selectivity and in high yield. |
