The crucible employed for electroslag melting is constructed in two sections, an upper and a lower. The upper section surrounds the molten slag and is cooled separately in such a way, as to keep heat extraction from the melt to a minimum, whilst the lower portion is made from copper surrounded by a water jacket. In the latter section is the solidified metal ingot with the pool of molten metal on top. The reduced cooling action in the upper section can be achieved in a variety of ways, examples being passage of molten metal or salt instead of water, use of water but thicker wall thickness, cooling chamber filled with alumina granules between which air is circulated etc. By reducing heat losses from the slag, the thermal efficiency of the process is greatly increased.
|
