PURPOSE:To reduce the size and weight and to obtain excellent contrast characteristics by providing an optical compensation member which is made of a uniaxially drawn high polymer sheet body and arranged on one side of a liquid crystal display element to compensate the birefringence of liquid crystal, a 1/4-wavelength plate, and a 2nd polarizing member. CONSTITUTION:When the optical compensating member 11 made of the uniaxially drawn high polymer sheet body is used on one side of the liquid crystal display element 4, a light display and a dark display are both made by extracting only linear polarized light by a projection-side polarizing plate 13 from elliptic polarized light from the liquid crystal display element 4. Therefore, when a voltage less than a display threshold value is applied to the liquid crystal display element 4 to make, for example, the light display, elliptic polarized light beams with wavelengths corresponding to red, green, and blue have elliptic azimuths almost in the same direction right under the projection side polarizing plate and the shape of the elliptic polarized light approximates linear polarized light relatively. Consequently, the excellent contrast with the small- sized, lightweight constitution is obtained. |
