1353005 Reduction of chlorinated hydrocarbons IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 May 1971 [8 June 1970] 27541/70 Heading C5E Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons containing at least 2 chlorine atoms or chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons containing at least 4 chlorine atoms are reduced to hydrocarbons by treatment in the gaseous phase with H 2 in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and a support which is Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 or active carbon. The reduction may be carried out at 150-600‹ C. with Ni, Pd or Pt in amount 0À1-5% by wt. of the support. Suitable starting materials are hexachlorobenzene; CCl 4 ; 1,1- or 1,2-dichloroethane; 1,1,2-trichloroethane; trichloroethylene; perchloroethylene; and hexachlorobutadiene. |
