PURPOSE:To obtain a sintered material having high mechanical strength in a short time by feeding a carbon material to be sintered to a press to form it into a plate having a specified shape and thickness, pressing it, and feeding power to a light source of an incandescent lamp provided in a press die or adjacent thereto to apply strong light including heat ray to the whole surface of said plate. CONSTITUTION:An incandescent lamp for emitting light including heat ray is provided in a cavity 121 of a die 12, which lamp 14 is fixed to a die 12 by a fixture 142 at a position such that light from the filament of the lamp is directed to a desired point on a carbon material to be sintered by means of a reflection mirror 122. Said material 13 is held between a pair of press die 11 composed of translucent material to start the action of a heating control device 18 in association with the action of a press device 16 so that power is fed to the lamp 14 from a heating power source 17 to heat the carbon material to be sintered and pressing force of the press is increased for sintering during the period of maximum temperature.
