Procedure for obtaining erythromycin 9 - [O - [(2 - methoxyethoxy) methyl] oxime] (roxithromycin), in which the reaction between erythromycin 9-oxime and a compound of formula <IMAGE> (X is a leaving group in nucleophilic substitution) is brought about by agitating at ambient temperature a solution of both compounds in an organic solvent, immiscible in water, with an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide, in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. Roxithromycin is a macrolide related to erythromycin, which shows antibiotic activity against Gram-positive bacteria, as well as against other microorganisms.
