1,262,318. Purifying exhaust gas. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. March 24, 1969 [April 23, 1968], No. 15235/69. Heading F1B. In a method for purifying a fuel-rich exhaust gas from an I. C. engine the exhaust gases are contracted, without adding external oxygen to the exhaust stream, at temperatures in excess of 800‹ F. with a catalyst comprising a packing or bed of an unsupported alloy comprising nickel and copper or nickel, chromium and iron to reduce the nitrogen oxides content of the exhaust gas. The unburnt hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide may be oxidized by adding oxygen or air and contacting the gas with a second unsupported catalyst at a temperature in excess of 800‹ F. The second catalyst may be a metal or alloy of Groups IB or IV to VIII of the periodic system. The catalyst may be in chip or sintered form or metallic wool, screens or gauzes heated by flame or electrically.
