The subject of the invention is a method and a device for determining the particle size composition of a loose product. In order, rapidly and at very close time intervals, to obtain data on the particle size composition of a loose product, a force sensor (16) is moved through a bed of the product (12) so as to sweep the entire cross section of the bed, the amplitude of the electrical pulses delivered by the sensor is compared with a threshold corresponding to a given size of the pieces, the pulses with amplitude equal to or greater than this threshold are counted, and the content in the product of pieces whose size is greater than or equal to that corresponding to the said threshold is determined on the basis of the member of pulses counted during the sweeping of the total cross section of the bed. <IMAGE>
