The invention relates to a method and device for extracting the organic material contained in household waste, with a view to composting it. The method is characterised in that the said waste is introduced into a primary screen, the mesh dimension of which is between approximately 100 and 200 mm, at least on one of its parts, in that the fines from the primary screen are subjected successively to a magnetic extraction, to a possible manual sorting, to a grinding and to a screening, and in that the fines from the latter are subjected to a densimetric sorting which supplies, on the one hand, the final impurities and, on the other hand, the organic material to be composted.
