Combustion of cpds. contg. starting materials (IA,IB) contg. P and esp. also 5 and/or halogen, esp. organic cpds. contg. these elements, is carried out in the presence of an alkali(ne earth) cpd. (II) and heat is obtd. from the combustion prods. in a heat recovery station following the combustion station. The novelty is that (II) is used in such amts. that at least the (I) contg. P are burnt completely and converted to salts. Pref. the molar ratio of alkali(ne earth) metal to P is at least 1.5, pref. at least 1.8, (II) is a strongly basic cpd. and the molar ratio of base equiv. to the sum of acid equiv. is ca. 0.1-1.0, pref. 0.1-0.5. The reaction-specific dimensions are calculated from the type and amt. of (I) and the type of (II) and tested for compatibility with the limiting values of the combustion and heat recovery stations. If they are not compatible, the amt. of (I) or (II) is varied until they are compatible. The limiting value for the combustion station is determined by the max. compatible combustion temp.. ADVANTAGE - Harmful organic cpds. are converted to harmless inorg. cpds. without using excess (II), which would damage the refractory walls of the combustion furnace, or deposition of corrosive acidic P cpds. in the heat exchanger.
