An incinerator for burning refuse has a sloping grid on which the refuse is burnt with the aid of oxygen or oxygen enriched air from pipes (9). The refuse slides down the grid as it burns so that the incombustible residue slides off the lower end of the grid into a melting crucible (4). The residue is melted by burners (5) which are supplied either with pure oxygen or oxygen enriched air. The residue is heated to a temperature high enough to destroy any furane or dioxin which may be contained in the refuse. USE/ADVANTAGE - Disposal of refuse with residue melting crucible being combined with the incinerator.
