The description relates to a device (10) for the intermittent application of a fluid to a substrate with a valve actuated by a pressure medium which opens a fluid chanel leading from an inlet (30) to an application nozzle (38) or the like in a controlled manner and has a valve needle (70) co-opoerating with a valve seat (36) which bears in coaxial array a piston (80) movable to and fro in a cylinder (42) in the direction of the axis of the valve needle (70) and having a central drilling through which the valve needle (70) passes. Thereby the piston (80) is shrunk on the valve needle (70) and there is a further intimate connection between the piston (80) and the valve needle (70) which is produced after the shrunk joint has been made.
