[Also in Division C3] Vapours of organic solvents and volatile radioactive substances are adsorbed by contacting the vapours with a powder polyethylene having a specific surface area of not less than 22m<SP>2</SP>/g, and prepared by polymerisation below the melting point of the polymer in the gaseous phase or in a liquid phase in which the polymer produced is insoluble by means of ionising radiation or a radical initiator. The polymer may be cross-linked by irradiation, coated with a further polymer from a solution thereof in a non-solvent for the polyethylene, or have a further polymer, e.g of styrene, vinyl vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, 4-vinyl pyridine or butadiene, graft polymerised thereon. Many examples are given including the adsorption of (1 to 6) acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, methyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, isobutyl acetate, styrene, n-heptane, formic acid, N,N-dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, water and isopropyl alcohol on polyethylene; (7) n-heptane on radiation cross-linked polyethylene; acetone, methyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, isobutyl acetate, styrene, n-heptane, carbon tetrachloride and water on (8) polystyrene grafted polyethylene, (9) polyvinyl acetate grafted polyethylene, (10) polyethyl acrylate grafted polyethylene, (11) polyethylene glycol coated polyethylene and (12) polystyrene coated polyethylene; and (13) radioactive bromine, iodine, krypton and methyl iodide on polyethylene.
