The hatch cover (5) for a coastal ship for carrying large loads has an extended shape and sits on sealed sills. The hold space is held at a positive pressure using a pumping system (12) and a pressure control valve (14) to vent excess pressure. The pressure is obtained using air warmed by the engine exhaust. Additional sealing is obtained by forcing air into the sealing profiles.
