Redn. of zearalenone (I) to zearalanol (II) involves dissolving zearalenone in an excess of an aq. alkaline mineral base, pref. aq. sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate. The soln. is treated with a powder of a nickel-aluminium (50/50) alloy at 10-80 deg.C pref. 20-50 deg.C. After filtration and acidification the zearalanol is recovered, pure and in almost quantitative yield. Quantity of base = 3-12 molar equivs. per molecule of zearalenone. Mass of nickel-aluminium alloy = 0.3-1 times the mass of zearalenone. USE/ADVANTAGE - Diastereomers of zearalanol are useful as anabolic and oestrogenic substances for oral or parenteral admin. to animals. Prior art uses expensive metal catalysts (e.g. platinum) requiring costly recovery, flammable solvents (ethanol or methanol) which pose a risk at the stage of sepn. of the catalyst, and industrial hydrogenators. The present process uses aq. solns. and gives a very high yield (e.g. 97.8%) better than prior art (90%).
