The invention concerns a smelting electrode for glass, which is intended to act as the current path within glass in particular in a glass smelting furnace operating either wholly or partially on the electrical smelting principle, and which is arranged to be taken inside the smelting furnace through the wall and/or bottom 2, 3, 6 of the smelting furnace from outside the smelting furnace. In order to prevent corrosion of the part of the glass smelting electrode which is taken outside the smelting furnace 1, according to the invention surface treatment is carried out consisting of a protective layer 20 on the glass smelting electrode 5 at least on the part which is taken outside the smelting furnace 1 in order to reduce or prevent contact between atmospheric oxygen and the glass-smelting electrode material 21. <IMAGE>
