The present invention is directed to emulsion systems comprising an emulsifying agent having a weight average molecular weight in excess of 1000, wherein the emulsifying agent comprises a hydrophilic portion which is swellable and suspendable in water and a hydrophobic portion capable of directly or indirectly binding to a hydrophobic droplet; the hydrophilic portion comprises anionic functionality which enhances the hydrophilicity of the hydrophilic portion. The emulsion composition of the present invention is surprisingly stable even in the presence of cationic surfactant and is therefore particularly advantageous in conditioning lotions and the like, because cationic skin lotions are generally preferred commercially over nonionic or anionic lotions.
